At the bar Ted introduces the gang to his newest girlfriend, whose name Future Ted can't remember and instead refers to as "Blah Blah". Embarrassed that she and Ted met online playing World of Warcraft, she makes up a story about how she saw Ted across a crowded room at a cooking class. This prompts everyone to reminisce about how they all met each other, and their stories are told through flashbacks.
Marshall and Lily met when Lily needed help with her stereo and she had a strange feeling about the room Hewitt 110. Marshall was the one who opened the door after she knocked. It was love at first sight.
Ted and Marshall met when they became college roommates. Marshall thought that Ted was the Dean until that night when he saw Ted after "eating a sandwich", which was older Ted's euphemism for smoking marijuana.
Ted and Barney met in the men's room of McLaren's, after which Barney makes Ted his new wingman and tells the girl that Ted is deaf so that Barney can get a girl's phone number. When the girl mentions she knows sign language, Ted signs to her a message that results in the girl giving Barney her number. Barney remarks that Ted must have said that Barney was a great guy, but what Ted really said was "He's lying to you. Just give him a fake number."
Ted and Robin met when they saw each other across the room of the bar in the pilot episode.
Marshall and Barney met at the bar. Barney said that he would help Marshall score the hottest chick in the bar. He pointed at a red-haired girl who turned out to be Lily. Marshall walked up to her and they kissed. Barney's response: "That man is a god."
Meanwhile, in the present, Barney accidentally-on-purpose reveals that Ted told everyone that he met Blah Blah online. Blah Blah becomes angry, particularly at Robin whom she perceives as a threat to her relationship with Ted. Ted attempts to placate her and reveals how he actually met Lily.
He and Lily met at a freshman party, the night before Lily first met Marshall. Ted and eventually Lily think they made out at that college party. Ted said that Lily remembered his and Marshall's dorm room, Hewitt 110, because she was looking for him. Blah Blah takes advantage of Ted's guilt and threatens to tell Marshall. However, after Ted discreetly convinces Lily that they had made out at the freshmen party, Blah Blah still intends to tell Marshall, forcing Ted and Lily to come clean. However, Marshall recalls the incident more correctly - Ted had been making out with Alexa, another girl at the college, while Lily had been making out with another guy named Colin. Lily and Ted had really met when Marshall introduced her to him while he was crying about his ex-girlfriend, Karen.
In the present, Blah Blah angrily breaks up with Ted while Ted is secretly still convinced that he and Lily had actually made out, but spares the truth from Lily and Marshall to preserve their friendship. However, at his college reunion in 2020, Ted learns from Alexa that Marshall had been right all along.
Barney writes about the "Hot Crazy scale". He provides a quiz so readers can figure out where they fit on the scale. He advises readers who do not like the results to adjust their looks and personality accordingly.[1]
Gloria Calderon Kellet, the writer of this episode, won a National Council of La Raza ALMA award for Outstanding Writing for a Television Series for this episode on August 17, 2008.[5]
